As much as I love my job, it’s rare I’d ever choose to go back and do a specific shoot again, often I love the results, but the reality of achieving the final film is usually punishing work. However, this shoot in Brazil I would go back and do a thousand times over, amazing people, lovely conditions and beautiful wildlife that for once co-operated.
On wildlife shoots it’s common I get a very brief moment to film an individual animal and then it moves on, never to be seen it again. However here, we kept seeing the same jaguars over and over, at different times of day as they were enacting different behaviours. One female, Esmerelda, we saw sleeping, hunting, capturing a prey, dragging it back and helping her cub with its own kill. Usually safaris feel like sight seeing from afar, but Oncafari was a fully immersive experience and one that hasn’t been replicated on any other shoot.
If you ever get the chance to visit, take that oppertunity.
